Eyecatchers Notebook

The Racecourse Notebook section of the Newmarket Bulletin contains expert analysis by our team of highly experienced race-readers. Compiled by our extensive team both on and off the track, they detail any noteworthy performances with a view to future engagements. They are particularly valuable as Eyecatcher entries are made by our experts on the day of the race, they are without bias or outside influence and consequently provide a completely independent view of the horse in question both for its connections and, indeed, punters considering their betting plans. All Eyecatcher entries are held in a database and are available for inspection on demand using our easy to navigate system. Similarly, 'dark horses' are added to the database, as and when such data becomes available. Moreover, when any Eyecatcher horse is declared to run, the Newmarket Bulletin 'flags' it up immediately on the racecard with full comments. Look out for the 'N' symbol in the Eye Column. The accompanying number indicates our editor's assessment of the value of the note from 1-5, with 5 being top class.

An excellent example of our notebook horses is Angel Gabrial who clearly delivered what was expected following his noteworthy performance in the Chester Cup, where he was considered an unlucky loser (see comments below). He, subsequently, produced an excellent performance to win the Northumberland Plate, turning the form around with Suegioo who had beaten him at Chester. In addition, while Angel Gabrial was the only eye-catcher in the field at Newcastle, he was also the top ranked horse and, consequently, the Judge's Verdict, making him the clear bet in the race.

Result : Angel Gabrial WON 4/1

Our second notebook example, New Story, was noted as an eye catcher on his debut. He’d run very well on his only subsequent racecourse appearance when perhaps given a little too much to do and beaten by some useful performers. Worth another try on only his 3rd race course appearance, he justified the inclusion into the Newmarket Bulletin notebooks with an emphatic victory.

Result : New Story WON 5/2

Alternatively, if you click on the notebook icon as a member you’ll be provided with a list of all notebook horses for that specific day's racing and for the flat where the declarations are 48 hours the next days notebooks will also be available.

Blaklion worked in exemplary fashion at Guting Power ahead of his projected run in the Grand National trial at Haydock. Last season's Royal Sun Alliance Chase winner has had a light campaign. He shaped well in the Charlie Hall at Wetherby and notwithstanding the fact that he was a beaten favourite at Wetherby on Boxing Day there is surely more to come. The ground at Haydock will not cause any problems and he has been refreshed by his break.

From a yard that had been very quiet prior to the meeting but had a winner a couple of days earlier and this fellow porved theyre on the way back. He cruised through the race but after going to the front comfortably, he was collared by an absolute blot on the handicap. Looks sure to win more races and 3m and slower than good siuts.

Fell three out here but was always going to be hindered by the downfall just prior to this race making it a real slog. he was never enjoying the ground but, despite one or two errors was just starting to get back into it when slithering to the ground after three out. he would undoubtedly have had a say in the finish and there's little doubt he is handicapped to win a decent little event when he gets his favoured good ground. one to bear in mind over three miles or thereabouts.

Divine Spear will make up into a fine chaser but he has still more to offer over hurdles. He worked well on the Farringdon Road and he can supplement his winning tally at Ascot tomorrow.

From a yard that hadnt had a winner for quite some while prior to the meeting and the fact he was able to get so close here, indicates he may well be the best in the long run. He has been progressive all year and can be expected to win a big prize in the near future over the minumum trip. Goes on most ypes of ground but untried on extremes.

Was rather unlucky to meet two horses who were at the peak of their powers but the way he travelled through the race here suggests he can win a decent prize in the not too distance future. Has enough pace about him for shorter than 3m and a little juice in the ground ideal.

Stepping up to this trip for the first time, he ran a blinder and was noted stayong on again at the death. he is certain to win over this trip on good ground but by Yeats out of a Hernando mare, he may well get a good deal further in time. One to look out for in a staying handicap.

Arcanada ran a race of rich promise here as there is little doubt that he was severely compromised by having to race on the stands' side. He quickened up well a furlong and a half out to hold every chance before tiring slightly one hundred yards from home to finish second in his unfavoured group of ten. A similar handicap is well within his compass and a slight drop back in trip could prove absolutely ideal.

Is defintely a chaser in the making and although he was well beaten last time at Haydock by the impressive Neon Wolf, he showed enough to suggest he will be winning races at a lower level shortly. He has been working really well at home and is one to note.

By some way second best to his stablemate here despite only going down by a nose. he was a mile clear of the rest and looks sure to win plenty of good chases over 2m6f or further. Goes on any ground bar extremes.

Second here. Ran a race chock full of promise. Ten lengths behind pace at half way in this 5f contest but had reduced that to six a furlong from him but simply flew through the last hundred and fifty yards. Yet another under this rider to make our notebook this week and like one or two others shaped as though he may want further than this five. By Dream Ahead and related to a couple of 100 rated performers, he finished so fast, that he would have beaten the impressive debut winner in another stride and he is without doubt one to follow and looks sure to win shortly. Useful.

Showed staying qualities here in coming through to chase the winner inside the last quarter mile and left a very favourable impression. from a yard that do particularly well with staying types and although she may well get further in due course, the stepp up to 12f would appear in order for her now. Can be expected towin a maiden, at least, and a handicap or two is well within her compass.

Hadn't seen track since Aintree 2014 but gave a massive account of himself after his long lay off and 'met one' in the shape of the useful winner. Is well related to both flat and jumps winners and could do both jobs. He looks to have bright future and goes well on good and soft ground. Would be a stayer on the flat and will probably need 2m4f over hurdles.
