Eyecatchers Notebook

The Racecourse Notebook section of the Newmarket Bulletin contains expert analysis by our team of highly experienced race-readers. Compiled by our extensive team both on and off the track, they detail any noteworthy performances with a view to future engagements. They are particularly valuable as Eyecatcher entries are made by our experts on the day of the race, they are without bias or outside influence and consequently provide a completely independent view of the horse in question both for its connections and, indeed, punters considering their betting plans. All Eyecatcher entries are held in a database and are available for inspection on demand using our easy to navigate system. Similarly, 'dark horses' are added to the database, as and when such data becomes available. Moreover, when any Eyecatcher horse is declared to run, the Newmarket Bulletin 'flags' it up immediately on the racecard with full comments. Look out for the 'N' symbol in the Eye Column. The accompanying number indicates our editor's assessment of the value of the note from 1-5, with 5 being top class.

An excellent example of our notebook horses is Angel Gabrial who clearly delivered what was expected following his noteworthy performance in the Chester Cup, where he was considered an unlucky loser (see comments below). He, subsequently, produced an excellent performance to win the Northumberland Plate, turning the form around with Suegioo who had beaten him at Chester. In addition, while Angel Gabrial was the only eye-catcher in the field at Newcastle, he was also the top ranked horse and, consequently, the Judge's Verdict, making him the clear bet in the race.

Result : Angel Gabrial WON 4/1

Our second notebook example, New Story, was noted as an eye catcher on his debut. He’d run very well on his only subsequent racecourse appearance when perhaps given a little too much to do and beaten by some useful performers. Worth another try on only his 3rd race course appearance, he justified the inclusion into the Newmarket Bulletin notebooks with an emphatic victory.

Result : New Story WON 5/2

Alternatively, if you click on the notebook icon as a member you’ll be provided with a list of all notebook horses for that specific day's racing and for the flat where the declarations are 48 hours the next days notebooks will also be available.

Unraced New Approach colt Masar has been given a 2018 Derby entry. He is , unsurprisingly, a well bred sort. He is from the extended family of Sea The Stars and Galileo and his early work has been highly encouraging and he has shown that he is at home on an easy surface. The stable has won with all five two year olds it has run so far and Masar can add to the tally.

By Getway, this Largy point winner has looked good in all his early work and indications are that he could take very high order in his chosen career path. He has the option to go in bumpers or hurdles and although that decision not taken yet, is definitely one for the short list wherever he turns up.

Although posessing a, largely, fast ground pedigree this colt by Dansili has a pronounced high knee action that would not have been suited by the fast ground here. he hits the ground very hard but, nevertheless was in the process of running a big race until hampered and becoming unbalanced going into the dip. He was given an easy time of things but there is little doubt, he will be capable of much more when getting his toe in.

Was making his debut for the yard but ran a blinder and, but for a mistake 3 out, he may well have taken a hand inthe finish. He stayed on stringly up the hill but could get no closer than 7th, leaving a most positive impressiona and a big prize awaits in due course over this trip or a tad further. Ideally suited by good or good to soft..

5th here - Owned by Her Majesty had obviously been laid out for this big event and ran a blinder without ever being able to get in a blow at the leaders. Made ground from the rear in the final quarter mile but wasn't able to quicken, merely staying on well without being hard ridden. He looks sure to get further and will be suited by faster ground. Can win a staying handicap shortly.

2nd here, and had some decent sorts behind and although its entirely possible they didnt handle the prevailing soft ground, this fellow had also won on good tofirm but made light of the surface and was desperatelyh unlucky not to win this. Only going down by a head he was only colared on the line after forging ahead with a furlong to go. Looks sure to win more races and 5f on faster ground looks sure ot be his ideal.

This unraced four year old by Ballingarry is a half brother to four winners in France and has been pleasing connections at home. He has been working very well and looks a readymade bumper winner after going particularly well with a couple of the yards recent winners.

Hardly a dark horse, being unbeaten in three bumpers and a maiden hurdle but, from the same shrewd gentleman that told us about Faugheen before he had ever jumped a hurdle, this one comes from an upwardly mobile yard who could well break more records this term. He is by Germany and may well not want the ground too soft although he has won in it and has recently schooled in electric fashion. Really could be anything.

Ran a blinder on his debut here and by first season stallion, Dawn Approach, he made quite an impression. He was always likely to succumb to the more experienced favourite but did so only in the last few yards and left the impression he can win one of these, especially on a stiffer track. he will be well suited by a step up to 6f and can be expected to win his maiden sometime very soon.

Is defintely a chaser in the making and although he was well beaten last time at Haydock by the impressive Neon Wolf, he showed enough to suggest he will be winning races at a lower level shortly. He has been working really well at home and is one to note.

There was a lot to like about the way this fellow lived up to his name and made great strides towards the front inside the last. Possibly got to the lead for a brief stride or two but lack of peak fitness was a factor and he looks to have plenty more to come. Will definitely be suited by a step up to six furlongs in timebut looks sure to win a maiden over either trip.

Is every inch a stayer and looked to have this won coming to two out but while putting in a strong challengre from the two pole, he could never master the leader and it looks as though a slight step back in trip will serve him well. Sure to win again soon and is at home on all bar extremes of ground.

The stable have provided a masterclass in the cross country division and this fellow, only seven years old has his whole career ahead of him in this sphere. He was fourth at the Festival last year but is reported to have strengthened up and improved significantly over the Summer. His owner has a wealth of riches in this division so it is uncertain where he will be campaigned but is one to follow in cross country event either side of the Irish Sea and the Festival is a distinct possibility. Goes on most types of ground.

Hadn't seen track since Aintree 2014 but gave a massive account of himself after his long lay off and 'met one' in the shape of the useful winner. Is well related to both flat and jumps winners and could do both jobs. He looks to have bright future and goes well on good and soft ground. Would be a stayer on the flat and will probably need 2m4f over hurdles.

Arcanada ran a race of rich promise here as there is little doubt that he was severely compromised by having to race on the stands' side. He quickened up well a furlong and a half out to hold every chance before tiring slightly one hundred yards from home to finish second in his unfavoured group of ten. A similar handicap is well within his compass and a slight drop back in trip could prove absolutely ideal.
WINNER: Arcanada (IRE) FINAL ODDS: 8/11F
