Eyecatchers Notebook

The Racecourse Notebook section of the Newmarket Bulletin contains expert analysis by our team of highly experienced race-readers. Compiled by our extensive team both on and off the track, they detail any noteworthy performances with a view to future engagements. They are particularly valuable as Eyecatcher entries are made by our experts on the day of the race, they are without bias or outside influence and consequently provide a completely independent view of the horse in question both for its connections and, indeed, punters considering their betting plans. All Eyecatcher entries are held in a database and are available for inspection on demand using our easy to navigate system. Similarly, 'dark horses' are added to the database, as and when such data becomes available. Moreover, when any Eyecatcher horse is declared to run, the Newmarket Bulletin 'flags' it up immediately on the racecard with full comments. Look out for the 'N' symbol in the Eye Column. The accompanying number indicates our editor's assessment of the value of the note from 1-5, with 5 being top class.

An excellent example of our notebook horses is Angel Gabrial who clearly delivered what was expected following his noteworthy performance in the Chester Cup, where he was considered an unlucky loser (see comments below). He, subsequently, produced an excellent performance to win the Northumberland Plate, turning the form around with Suegioo who had beaten him at Chester. In addition, while Angel Gabrial was the only eye-catcher in the field at Newcastle, he was also the top ranked horse and, consequently, the Judge's Verdict, making him the clear bet in the race.

Result : Angel Gabrial WON 4/1

Our second notebook example, New Story, was noted as an eye catcher on his debut. He’d run very well on his only subsequent racecourse appearance when perhaps given a little too much to do and beaten by some useful performers. Worth another try on only his 3rd race course appearance, he justified the inclusion into the Newmarket Bulletin notebooks with an emphatic victory.

Result : New Story WON 5/2

Alternatively, if you click on the notebook icon as a member you’ll be provided with a list of all notebook horses for that specific day's racing and for the flat where the declarations are 48 hours the next days notebooks will also be available.

He has made up into a useful sort after just four runs. He finished 4th here, but the does not tell the whole story. He possesses plenty of pace but he did not get the chance to show his full merit. He was last round the home turn and rather hemmed in until inside the last furlong. Once extricated he finished and he was flying at the line. Will be well suited by six furlongs on turf but may well get further in due course. A sound surface likely to suit best. He is one to keep on the right side.

3rd to Strings of Life and took the eye with a whirlwind finish. He almost certainly needs 6f already but may well get away with a stiffer track or slower ground and when getting either, looks sure to open his account for a yard currently in excellent form
WINNER: Cotubanama FINAL ODDS: 6/1

Corrosive had run better than his finishing position suggested when teneth in the Britannia handicap at Royal Ascot and he once showed he will not be long in regaining the winning thread when he lost out by a head to Rip Orff who often shows his best form on the July Course. Corrosive was ridden to lead a furlong out, but in edging right under pressure he opened the door to his conqueror who took full advantage. He has won over both seven furlongs and a mile, but the longer trip probably suits him better now. On turf he is untried on ground softer than good and his US breeding suggests that soft conditions could well be a hindrance.
WINNER: Corrosive (USA) FINAL ODDS: 4/1

Race Course: Ascot Race: 1555 Lavazza Stakes (Heritage Handicap)

In finishing fifth to Wells Farhh Go, First Eleven was inconvenienced by the overzealous watering of the ground which caused the surface to be nearer to good to soft than the advertised good to firm. First Eleven needs fast ground to be seen at his best and he can leave this form behind and win a good mile and a half prize when he gets it.
WINNER: First Eleven FINAL ODDS: 5/2J

Race Course: Haydock Race: 1615 32Red Sprint Cup Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series)

The Tin Man finished fourth to Merchant Navy, but he never seemed to get to grips with the race until it was too late. He is highly consistent, he goes well on this ground and he ought to be given another chance back here at his favourite course. He was staying on best at the death and had the pace been a tad quicker, he may well have finished even closer. A stiff six furlongs suits him and he will be the one to beat when he next appears here.

Race Course: Sandown Race: 1500 188Bet Casino Atalanta Stakes (Fillies' And Mares' Group 3)
Date: 01-09-2018 Time: 1500 Distance: 1 m

Veracious finished third to Alpha Centauri, but she had two Guineas winners behind her on only her third start. This was a cracking effort from a filly hailing from a yard whose horses surpassed themselves at the meeting. There was no fluke about this excellent effort and it augurs well for her future. She is by Frankel and she will be at home at any trip up to a mile and a quarter. She has shown plenty of speed aplenty here and looks sure to win a decent event if her sights are lowered slightly. She is up to Group standard and she is one to follow.
WINNER: Veracious FINAL ODDS: 10/11F

Five year old two mile maiden hurdle winner Brave Eagle is emphatically one to note. He is a fine physical specimen and he has been working in exemplary fashion on the home slopes. He is well up to making a further mark in novice company.

Hardly has the form figures to get you excited but we're reliably informed that, if this fellow can steer clear of injury, he is a very well handicapped individual who looks sure to make his way through the ranks. Where he will end up is anyones guess but, starting from a very workable mark of only 100, he will be winning soon. He is likely to be best served by good to soft or slower.
WINNER: Royal Hall (FR) FINAL ODDS: 9/2

Race Course: Beverley Race: 1410 John Jenkins Memorial Claiming Stakes

17-04-2018, Newmarket, , vital Energene-Q10 Handicap Flat, Turf, Good to soft.
8th here, and hasnt finished winning yet. After a disappointing reappearance, he showed much more here, staying on strongly under very tender handling, indeed, was never asked for anything like maximum effort and, on his way back down the weights again, he looks sure to strike when conditions suit. A mile is his trip and a little juice in the ground is ideal. One to keep tabs on.
WINNER: Withernsea (IRE) FINAL ODDS: 8/11F

In finishing seventh to his stable companion Soldiers Call, Rockin Roy ran well. The winner is a sharper type but Rockin Roy showed a tremendous attitude. He was outpaced by the principals, but he stayed on really well. This level of competition may well be beyond him, but he will be a force in the nurseries. He looks sure to stay six furlongs and good sort that he is, he can win plenty of races.
WINNER: Rockin Roy (IRE) FINAL ODDS: 13/8

Race Course: Goodwood Race: 1405 Ladbrokes Celebration Mile Stakes (Group 2)
Date: 25-08-2018 Time: 1405 Distance: 1 m

Beat The Bank finished sixth to Accidental Agent, but was beaten by only two lengths on ground that would have been unsuitable for him. Although this was a slightly below par renewal, we have little doubt that on slower ground, he would almost certainly have won this judged on the way he progressed through the field and stayed strongly at the finish without being able to get on terms. He is thoroughly progressive and he is one to be with over this trip when there is more cut in the ground.
WINNER: Beat The Bank FINAL ODDS: 11/8F

Race Course: York Race: 1350 Sky Bet And Symphony Group Strensall Stakes (Group 3)
Date: 25-08-2018 Time: 1350 Distance: 1 m 0f 177 yds

Lord Glitters finish second here to Accidental Agent, a rival he had beaten in a handicap towards the back end of last season. The going here was the deciding factor as he ran a similar race, making up a lot of late headway and could be expected to have finished even closer on softer ground. This was a slightly below par renewal, nevertheless Lord Glitters saw the mile out well and he is one to keep tabs on at a slightly lower level when conditions are in his favour.
WINNER: Lord Glitters (FR) FINAL ODDS: 2/1F

Race Course: York Race: 1535 Darley Yorkshire Oaks (Fillies' and Mares' Group 1)

This Sea The Stars filly has plenty of pattern performers close up in her pedigree and she was well found in the market being backed from 13/8 to 5/4 just before the off. She ran really well in defeat. She finished well clear of the third and she had quickened nicely to take up the running before being collared by a more experienced filly. She looks sure to improve when stepped up in trip. Good ground suits although she probably would not want extremes. She will need at least ten furlongs to be seen at her best.
WINNER: Sea of Class (IRE) FINAL ODDS: 7/4F

Race Course: York Race: 1615 Sir Henry Cecil Galtres Stakes (Fillies' and Mares' Listed)

In finishing second to Agrotera, Ortiz was very unlucky. The winner is undoubtedly handicapped. Ortiz was the only one from the stands side to get into the race and she left a very positive impression with some good fillies in behind. She enjoyed the step up in trip and on this evidence she looks sure to win a decent event over a similar trip. She is from a family that have also done well on the all weather, and all in all she will be one to keep an eye out for on both turf and artificial surfaces in the near future.

Race Course: Newbury Race: 1535 Ladyswood Stud Hungerford Stakes (Group 2) (Str)
Date: 18-08-2018 Time: 1535 Distance: 7f
14-07-2018, Newmarket, 6f , ey July Cup Stakes (Group 1) Flat, Turf, Good to firm.
4th here, to US Navy Flag and ran an absolute stormer, never nearer than at the finish. He had previously shown good form over 7f inclduing at group level and it was an ambitious gesture by the Trainer to throw him i here but it nearly paid off. A shower or two f rain may well have seen him in the first three and theres little doubt he will need a sterner test at this trip to trouble top class opposition. However, he may well be able to win at this trip on good if he takes a step down in grade or, if persisted with at this level, a stiffer track or seven furlongs will be his optimum. Goes on most ground bar extremes and a likeable individual who may well get his day in he Sun when conditions fall right. An admirable sort and one to follow.

Advertise did very well to finish second to Calyx here staying on strongly from a disadvantaged draw, on the extreme opposite side of the track to the clear winner. The winner may be exceptional but Martyn Meade's charge looks sure to win again and his hold-up style of racing points to a step up in trip. He is progressing well and he can win a similar event over a stiff six furlongs or further in the near future.
WINNER: Advertise FINAL ODDS: 11/10F

In finishing second to Antonia De Vega in what was almost certainly a high class maiden Zagitova suggested that she is a filly of real merit. She came through strongly to be never nearer than at the finish she will stay well. She would have been seen to greater effect here had she encountered a stronger pace. However, she is certainly not short of pace as befits a half sister of Garswood. She cost 1,600,000 guineas as a yearling, she has looks to match and she is almost certainly a pattern filly in the making.
WINNER: Zagitova (IRE) FINAL ODDS: 30/100F

Race Course: Goodwood Race: 1350 Bombay Sapphire Glorious Stakes (Group 3)

In finishing fifth to Monarchs Glen Mirage Dancer proved conclusively that he is much better served by further than a mile and a quarter. His normally meticulous trainer may have made his only error of judgement all week and although never seen with a chance, Mirage Dancer kept on strongly enough under his penalty to suggest he can win at this level and possibly even higher when stepped back up in trip. He goes well on fast ground and he equally at home on good, but he has yet to convince on anything slower.
WINNER: Mirage Dancer FINAL ODDS: 6/5F
