The Significant Entries section of Newmarket Bulletin provides details on
horses who have been entered in group and pattern races on the flat and
graded races over jumps. This information is provided both prior to and
after the race(s) in question and provides a clear indication as to how
highly connections may regard an individual, or what they had previously
thought the individual may have been capable of. The majority of these races
have various stages of entry, known as forfeits, each of these is identified
by a number after the name of the race, for example Derby 1 (first forfeit),
Derby 2 (second forfeit) and so on. This section has become extremely useful
for assessing connections' opinion of the relative merits of unraced horses
(particularly if used in conjunction with gallop reports from Newmarket) and
is invaluable for trainers seeking to find the best option for his/her own
unraced maiden, for instance..
This information is clearly identified on our race-card immediately after
the jockey's name.
From the example below we can see that Fendale was the only 2yo with a Group Race Entry, that being the Group Two Gimcrack Stakes at York’s Ebor Meeting in August.
It can also be noted that Fendale was the only PR1 rated 2yo, so is more precociously bred than all of the other runners, another reason to have been interested in the Bryan Smart 2yo.
Result: Fendale WON 7/2
Our 2nd example of this feature where Justice Day won, contained a notebook entry, a couple of gallops entries and a few other significant entry horses. Justice Day had been entered in every Group Race Sprint possible, indicating he is clearly held in very high regarded by his trainer. With entries in the top sprint races such as The Group One July Cup where he still remained after the forfeit stage”2” , The Diamond Jubilee and The Nunthorpe. In comparison to the opposition, who only had a fleeting entry in one or two Group races. Justice Day was quite clearly considered better than the standard required to win a conditions race, and justifiably proved that with a comprehensive victory.
Result: Justice Day WON 5/1
As shown on the image below, where three of the runners had previous graded race entries.
Montbazon the top weight had an initial entry for the Champion Hurdle at the recently run
Cheltenham Festival, Ballyglasheen had not only an initial entry in the Fred Winter Hurdle at
Cheltenham, but also a 2nd forfeit stage entry for the Triumph Hurdle, and finally Town Mouse
had a initial entry in the Fred Winter Hurdle. Clearly in this instance, connections felt Ballyglasheen
was worth an entry in two races at Cheltenham which included a 2nd forfeit entry for the Triumph Hurdle,
indicating the horse was highly regarded.
Result: Ballyglasheen WON 25/1
From the below example we can see that Snowboarder was the only runner with any significant entries,
and in fact he had previously held entries for no less than 3 Group One races.
Result: Snowboarder Won 13/2

entry line you are interested in and the following screen will be
As the image shows Snowboarder had previously been entered in the 2000 Guineas, The Dante and The St James
Palace Stakes, all top class races and clear indication that he was very well regarded by his powerful stable.
Having raced at Group 2 level on his final start in Dubai prior to making this his UK return as a 3yo,
he was very likely to be very competitive dropped into handicap company, which he clearly proved by
winning in decisive fashion.
We have found the Significant Entries information to be an extremely useful
tool, in that it clearly provides an insight into connections' opinion of
their horse. Of course, some trainers use a scattergun approach and enter
most of their horses in races they are extremely unlikely to take part in.
However, more often than not and by identifying those trainers who are more
selective in entering horses for big races, users can clearly identify well
Alternatively this information may be accessed by clicking on the
'Significant Entries' menu item on the main race-card screen. When doing so,
a grid will be displayed, (as with Gallops and Notebook entries) as shown
