Eyecatchers Notebook

The Racecourse Notebook section of the Newmarket Bulletin contains expert analysis by our team of highly experienced race-readers. Compiled by our extensive team both on and off the track, they detail any noteworthy performances with a view to future engagements. They are particularly valuable as Eyecatcher entries are made by our experts on the day of the race, they are without bias or outside influence and consequently provide a completely independent view of the horse in question both for its connections and, indeed, punters considering their betting plans. All Eyecatcher entries are held in a database and are available for inspection on demand using our easy to navigate system. Similarly, 'dark horses' are added to the database, as and when such data becomes available. Moreover, when any Eyecatcher horse is declared to run, the Newmarket Bulletin 'flags' it up immediately on the racecard with full comments. Look out for the 'N' symbol in the Eye Column. The accompanying number indicates our editor's assessment of the value of the note from 1-5, with 5 being top class.

An excellent example of our notebook horses is Angel Gabrial who clearly delivered what was expected following his noteworthy performance in the Chester Cup, where he was considered an unlucky loser (see comments below). He, subsequently, produced an excellent performance to win the Northumberland Plate, turning the form around with Suegioo who had beaten him at Chester. In addition, while Angel Gabrial was the only eye-catcher in the field at Newcastle, he was also the top ranked horse and, consequently, the Judge's Verdict, making him the clear bet in the race.

Result : Angel Gabrial WON 4/1

Our second notebook example, New Story, was noted as an eye catcher on his debut. He’d run very well on his only subsequent racecourse appearance when perhaps given a little too much to do and beaten by some useful performers. Worth another try on only his 3rd race course appearance, he justified the inclusion into the Newmarket Bulletin notebooks with an emphatic victory.

Result : New Story WON 5/2

Alternatively, if you click on the notebook icon as a member you’ll be provided with a list of all notebook horses for that specific day's racing and for the flat where the declarations are 48 hours the next days notebooks will also be available.

Beat The Bank finished sixth to Accidental Agent, but was beaten by only two lengths on ground that would have been unsuitable for him. Although this was a slightly below par renewal, we have little doubt that on slower ground, he would almost certainly have won this judged on the way he progressed through the field and stayed strongly at the finish without being able to get on terms. He is thoroughly progressive and he is one to be with over this trip when there is more cut in the ground.

5th here, to Godolphins wellhandicpped Dreamfield. Was sat last and never put in the race until it was all but ovber. Made a huge amount of ground in the last furlong and is capable of much better than he showed here. Ideally wants 6f and goes on all bar extremes of ground.

Scat Daddy filly New Jazz cost $550,000 at the Keeneland Sales. That is a deal to repay, but she made a bright start behind a classy winner when she finished third to Antonia De Vega. She looked in need of the experience, but she showed up well on the pace and stayed on nicely. She looks likely to make more than normal improvement for this run and she is a decent prospect

Lord Glitters finish second here to Accidental Agent, a rival he had beaten in a handicap towards the back end of last season. The going here was the deciding factor as he ran a similar race, making up a lot of late headway and could be expected to have finished even closer on softer ground. This was a slightly below par renewal, nevertheless Lord Glitters saw the mile out well and he is one to keep tabs on at a slightly lower level when conditions are in his favour.

Desert Wind has yet to win in two attempts on turf but in finishing a luckless fourth to Communique in this traditionally strong handicap he gave every indication that a victory on grass will surely not be long delayed. He was held up in touch for the majority of the contest and he was initially switched right two furlongs out and on finding his path blocked he then switched left and thereafter stayed on to be never nearer than at the finish. He probably will not be dropped in the weights for this but a strongly run race at this trip or, more probably a step up to a mile and a half should see him back in the winners' enclosure. He has yet to run on ground softer than good on turf.

3rd here, to Settle for Bay. This ex Italian trained 6yo showed he is a proper horse with a cracking effort on only his third start both for his trainer and, indeed, in this country. he was noted staying on stoutly inside the last frulong and, on susch a stiff track, there is a distinct chance he may well be better over further. INdeed, a winner over 10f in Italy, he is wel worth a chance at that trip here or perhaps at 9f, and looks sure to win a decent prize, perhaps at listed level. He has won on good ground mainly but had no probelm with the fast ground here and looks sure to step up on this when stepped up in trip.

Zaaki finished third to Hunting Horn, staying on relentlessly to be never nearer than at the finish. In common with many of the yard's runners during Ascot week Zaaki left his previous form behind. He has shown a liking for ease in the ground and may well get away with this trip on a stiff track on a softer surface. However, he needs further when the ground is quick. Either way he looks sure to win a decent event and he is one to keep on the right side.

3rd here but ran a stormer and, from a yard that have yet to really start to fire this Autumn, was noted staying on strongly and will definitely benefit from either further or a slower surface. One to very much keep an eye on.

He has made up into a useful sort after just four runs. He finished 4th here, but the does not tell the whole story. He possesses plenty of pace but he did not get the chance to show his full merit. He was last round the home turn and rather hemmed in until inside the last furlong. Once extricated he finished and he was flying at the line. Will be well suited by six furlongs on turf but may well get further in due course. A sound surface likely to suit best. He is one to keep on the right side.

In finishing second to Eqtidaar, Sands Of Mali may have been disadvantaged the middle of the track had looked the place to be. He finished fast on the stands side to go down by only a half length. Sands Of Mali is a former Gimcrack winner who is a tough and consistent performer. He may well re-oppose the winner in the July Cup and other top sprints but, given the opportunity to race with the principals, he may well turn out to be the best of these. He is certainly a high grade sprinter and has shown himself to be adept on most surfaces, possibly slightly more effective on easier ground. He is one to follow and he looks sure to win his a Group One event soon.

As he was sent off at long odds, finishing second to Poet's Word was a disappointing effort from Cracksman. He struggled to prevail at Epsom and this performance showed emphatically that he is not a ten furlong horse on fast ground as quick as prevailed. To be effective at this trip he needs slower ground. His demeanour in the paddock did not please many seasoned judges and he may have been below par. However, back on slower ground and/or over a mile and a half he can restore his presently tarnished reputation.
WINNER: Cracksman FINAL ODDS: 5/6F
