Eyecatchers Notebook

The Racecourse Notebook section of the Newmarket Bulletin contains expert analysis by our team of highly experienced race-readers. Compiled by our extensive team both on and off the track, they detail any noteworthy performances with a view to future engagements. They are particularly valuable as Eyecatcher entries are made by our experts on the day of the race, they are without bias or outside influence and consequently provide a completely independent view of the horse in question both for its connections and, indeed, punters considering their betting plans. All Eyecatcher entries are held in a database and are available for inspection on demand using our easy to navigate system. Similarly, 'dark horses' are added to the database, as and when such data becomes available. Moreover, when any Eyecatcher horse is declared to run, the Newmarket Bulletin 'flags' it up immediately on the racecard with full comments. Look out for the 'N' symbol in the Eye Column. The accompanying number indicates our editor's assessment of the value of the note from 1-5, with 5 being top class.

An excellent example of our notebook horses is Angel Gabrial who clearly delivered what was expected following his noteworthy performance in the Chester Cup, where he was considered an unlucky loser (see comments below). He, subsequently, produced an excellent performance to win the Northumberland Plate, turning the form around with Suegioo who had beaten him at Chester. In addition, while Angel Gabrial was the only eye-catcher in the field at Newcastle, he was also the top ranked horse and, consequently, the Judge's Verdict, making him the clear bet in the race.

Result : Angel Gabrial WON 4/1

Our second notebook example, New Story, was noted as an eye catcher on his debut. He’d run very well on his only subsequent racecourse appearance when perhaps given a little too much to do and beaten by some useful performers. Worth another try on only his 3rd race course appearance, he justified the inclusion into the Newmarket Bulletin notebooks with an emphatic victory.

Result : New Story WON 5/2

Alternatively, if you click on the notebook icon as a member you’ll be provided with a list of all notebook horses for that specific day's racing and for the flat where the declarations are 48 hours the next days notebooks will also be available.

Jerrysback looked right on his game when he worked well ahead of a novice hurdle engagement at Ascot. He won impressively on his first run for the stable at Plumpton last month and he looks ready to take a steep rise in class at the weekend.

He has made up into a useful sort after just four runs. He finished 4th here, but the does not tell the whole story. He possesses plenty of pace but he did not get the chance to show his full merit. He was last round the home turn and rather hemmed in until inside the last furlong. Once extricated he finished and he was flying at the line. Will be well suited by six furlongs on turf but may well get further in due course. A sound surface likely to suit best. He is one to keep on the right side.

Hardly has the form figures to get you excited but we're reliably informed that, if this fellow can steer clear of injury, he is a very well handicapped individual who looks sure to make his way through the ranks. Where he will end up is anyones guess but, starting from a very workable mark of only 100, he will be winning soon. He is likely to be best served by good to soft or slower.

In finishing second to Eqtidaar, Sands Of Mali may have been disadvantaged the middle of the track had looked the place to be. He finished fast on the stands side to go down by only a half length. Sands Of Mali is a former Gimcrack winner who is a tough and consistent performer. He may well re-oppose the winner in the July Cup and other top sprints but, given the opportunity to race with the principals, he may well turn out to be the best of these. He is certainly a high grade sprinter and has shown himself to be adept on most surfaces, possibly slightly more effective on easier ground. He is one to follow and he looks sure to win his a Group One event soon.

As he was sent off at long odds, finishing second to Poet's Word was a disappointing effort from Cracksman. He struggled to prevail at Epsom and this performance showed emphatically that he is not a ten furlong horse on fast ground as quick as prevailed. To be effective at this trip he needs slower ground. His demeanour in the paddock did not please many seasoned judges and he may have been below par. However, back on slower ground and/or over a mile and a half he can restore his presently tarnished reputation.

Sharja Bridge ultimately finished eighth to Monarchs Glen, but he looked sure to be involved in the finish a furlong out and he gave a clear indication that, at this level, he needs less of a test of stamina. He quickened up nicely two furlongs out he was almost level with the leaders before the furlong pole but went backwards quickly thereafter. Nine furlongs would appear the extent of his stamina at this stage on fast ground and, as he handles slower ground too, he may well be worth stepping back even further when there is a decent cut in the ground.

Come On Leicester ran well in finishing fifth here to Signora Cabello. She is the first foal of Mick Channon's useful sprint filly Graphic Guest. However, she will be much better suited to either a furlong further or slower ground. Either way, she has plenty of pace but not enough for top races such as this on fast ground. She was disadvantaged by her track position from stall one but she stayed on well. She is by Kodiac and she should get six furlongs. She is expected to win more races when conditions suit.

Perfection did well to finish fifth to Agrotera having had to run alone up the far rail for almost the whole race. She can be marked up as better than her finishing position suggests. She no company at all, but she showed a terrific attitude especially as her pedigree suggests she will be much better suited to easier ground. She is a winner at seven furlongs and she has the pace to win at that trip again. Nevertheless she saw this trip out well and she will not be troubled to win at either distance.

Sergei Prokofiev did well to finish third to Calyx and put up a tremendous effort after being given a lot of work to do. He was stone last in the far side of two groups with just a furlong and a half to go but he picked up really well and only just failed to fill the runners up spot. He is certain to win more good races on both sides of the Irish Sea. He goes well on fast ground and, unlike the first two home; this may well be the limit of his stamina. He has a nice turn of foot, he is very useful and he looks sure to win more races.

This renewal of the Chesham may be considered below par. Nevertheless, Nate The Great ran with real credit to finish to finish second to Arthur Kitt going down only narrowly. She is out of a half sister to James Garfield and he is bred for this trip and further and he stayed on well to give the winner a fright close home. Nate The Great is by Nathaniel and accordingly a further step up in trip should suit him well. He is a useful sort and he looks sure to win something similar.

Although she finished unplaced this Frankel half brother to Oaks winner Sariska showed plenty of pace before folding inside the last furlong. 2nd here, but was always behind the 8-ball. Slightly outpaced going into the dip he really stretched out once hitting the rising ground and gave every indication a step up to a mile will suit. May well get further, too, later on. One to keep tabs on when there is a little juice in the ground.

In finishing fifth Morning Beauty, Elasia, a half sister to 100 rated Ela's Ruby looked a stayer in the making. She was slow to start and she was pushed along to get involved. She travelled well enough but she was outpaced two furlongs out. Thereafter she stayed on well, and time may tell this was a good event. She may well have prevailed over had this race been over thirteen or fourteen furlongs. She is by Nathaniel and she will come on for introduction. She looks sure to win a maiden over this trip, or further, in due course.

In finishing 2nd, she showed a nice change of gear to get involved after travelling well in behind. she was rather isolated on the wing away from where the race developed. However, she showed more than enough to win a maiden and she looks sure to go on to something better, in due course. She should handle most types of ground.
