Eyecatchers Notebook

The Racecourse Notebook section of the Newmarket Bulletin contains expert analysis by our team of highly experienced race-readers. Compiled by our extensive team both on and off the track, they detail any noteworthy performances with a view to future engagements. They are particularly valuable as Eyecatcher entries are made by our experts on the day of the race, they are without bias or outside influence and consequently provide a completely independent view of the horse in question both for its connections and, indeed, punters considering their betting plans. All Eyecatcher entries are held in a database and are available for inspection on demand using our easy to navigate system. Similarly, 'dark horses' are added to the database, as and when such data becomes available. Moreover, when any Eyecatcher horse is declared to run, the Newmarket Bulletin 'flags' it up immediately on the racecard with full comments. Look out for the 'N' symbol in the Eye Column. The accompanying number indicates our editor's assessment of the value of the note from 1-5, with 5 being top class.

An excellent example of our notebook horses is Angel Gabrial who clearly delivered what was expected following his noteworthy performance in the Chester Cup, where he was considered an unlucky loser (see comments below). He, subsequently, produced an excellent performance to win the Northumberland Plate, turning the form around with Suegioo who had beaten him at Chester. In addition, while Angel Gabrial was the only eye-catcher in the field at Newcastle, he was also the top ranked horse and, consequently, the Judge's Verdict, making him the clear bet in the race.

Result : Angel Gabrial WON 4/1

Our second notebook example, New Story, was noted as an eye catcher on his debut. He’d run very well on his only subsequent racecourse appearance when perhaps given a little too much to do and beaten by some useful performers. Worth another try on only his 3rd race course appearance, he justified the inclusion into the Newmarket Bulletin notebooks with an emphatic victory.

Result : New Story WON 5/2

Alternatively, if you click on the notebook icon as a member you’ll be provided with a list of all notebook horses for that specific day's racing and for the flat where the declarations are 48 hours the next days notebooks will also be available.

14-04-2021, Newmarket, 1 m   , bet365 European Breeders' Fund Fillies' Maiden Stakes (Plus 10/GBB Race) Flat, Turf, Good to firm.
Spotted when fourth to Delta Bay but gave the impression the trip just about stretched her stamina. She broke very well from the gate but was reined back initially before settling on the rails a length or two off the pace. She stayed on well until the last 150 yards or so and bound to be better for the run, in any case, gave the impression that she would be much better suited to a drop in trip. Seven furlongs would appear to suit and while she handled this fast ground well, she may also go slghtly slower. Nicely bred and looks sure to win a race or two.

01-05-2021, Newmarket, 1 m 4f , Betfair Exchange Jockey Club Stakes (Group 2) Flat, Turf, Good to firm.
Spotted when 2nd to Sir Ron Priestley and this ultra consistent sort started his 4yo career with a commendable effort on ground that would have been a tad too quick for him. He shaped very well, travelling keenly for the most part and looked dangerous when pulled out two out but he weaved about on the quick ground and was ultimately well beaten even though only two lengths behind the winner. Showed most of his best form as a 3yo on good or slower ground and when reverting to that type of surface, with this behind him can resume winning ways.

08-02-2020, Warwick, 2f , shill Engineering Handicap Hurdle Jump, Turf, Soft.
Continues to catch the eye as he did when finishing a good 2nd to Fortunate George. After having a prominent position he got stuck in the deep ground after the 4th last at Warwick and lost a few places only to rally strongly on the better ground in the home straight running on into a comfortable 2nd. Even though he has form on the softer surfaces this strong stayer will come into his own on the quicker spring ground and could easily run up a sequence. Looking further in time he will also make a lovely chaser.

Spotted when 4th to Modern News in a hot Newmarket novice. Held up in the rear after a sluggish start made eye catching headway on the wide less favored part of the track. Was given a quiet ride but stayed on well without being asked for maximum effort. This speedy son of New Bay looks above average he has a bright future and will be seen to good effect and may go on to better things.

13-11-2020, Cheltenham, 2 m 5f , Ballymore Novices' Hurdle (Grade 2) (Registered As The Hyde Novices' Hurdle) (GBB Race) Jump, Turf, Good to soft.
Spotted when 5th to Does He know but his finishing position does not tell the whole story. He cruised up to the leaders having been held up for most of the event and, one point looked sure to score, but he completely emptied on the run to the last and was legless up the final climb. A step back in trip is the order of the day and, already successful on soft, is one to follow when stepped down in distance from this 2m5f.

13-04-2021, Newmarket, 5f , bet365 British EBF Novice Stakes (GBB Race) Flat, Turf, Good to firm.
Spotted when sixth to Forca Brasil but his ultimate finishing position bears no relation to the promise he showed. By the yards Guineas winner, Galileo Gold, he was always likely to be a six furlong performer, and shaped like one. he was outpaced early on but was noted staying on very strongly inside the last furlong and ran into the back of the second wave, chasing the leader with a furlong to run. Had to be eased down and then stayed on well without being asked for maximum effort. May not have been the best 2yo race ever seen on the Rowley Mile but this fella has a race or two in him and will appreciate a stuffer test.

15-04-2021, Newmarket, 1 m   , bet365 Wood Ditton Maiden Stakes (Plus 10) Flat, Turf, Good.
Spotted when 3rd to Peter the Great in the Wood Ditton for unraced 3yos. he was out the back for the most part and still in last position with just two to run. However, his jockey was looking for room for a hundred yards or so and eventually followed the winner through. He was making ground hand over fist in the last hundred yards and definitely needs a tad further. He is related to both 10f and 12f winners and is likely to be best suited by the former of those two trips, initially. Definitely capable of winning a maiden and may well be capable of something a little better in due course.

07-05-2021, Ascot, 5f , British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes (GBB Race) Flat, Turf, Soft.
Spotted when 3rd to Get Ahead and gave plenty of cause for encouragement in an event which invariably has a bearing on the fillies 2yo races at Royal Ascot. Out of a 2yo winner and a half sister to a 2yo winner, she is bred for this and was noted going exceptionally well at the back of the field with a couple of furlongs to run. Eased left towards the stands rail by Spencer, she picked up extremely well and stayed on strongly to the line albeit too late to catch the winner and second. By first season sire, Ardad who is doing so well she has pace and can win at this trip, particularly, on similar ground with this experience behind her but there appears little reason why she shouldn't improve at 6f. Either way she is expected to be winning races shortly and should handle most types of going.

12-11-2020, Chelmsford City, 7f , Support The Injured Jockeys Fund Novice Auction Stakes Flat, Polytrack, Standard.
Spotted when unplaced behind Trumble. Was never put in the race from his wide draw, his jockey taking him behind the field to tuck in on the rail straight form the start. Apparently coccooned in a pocket at the back until well inside the last, he had plenty of running left in him and is very much better than he showed here. By Ajaya out of an Acclamation mare, he will be well suited to all weather racing and this trip should be just about ideal. How good he is we dont know but he is definitely better than he showed here and is worth following once handicapped.

Spotted when third to Creative Force but was never ever put in the race with a chance. There was an enquiry and quite rightly the jockey indicated he was short of room but, in truth, a more aggressive ride would have found an out. He may not have beaten the impressive winner but would surely have given him more than a race and is considered a winner without a penalty, so well did he finish under such tender handling. He has already won over 7f and has run well over a mile but looks sure to win over this trip on a stiff track but looks sure to win a decent event over either trip. Goes on good fast ground and slower.

Spotted when fourth to Berkshire Shadow and showed tons of ability. He bolted out of the gates and took the field along until collared two out and slightly outpaced as they entered the final furlong. However, far from being beaten, he put his head down, showed a terrific attitude and came back at the three leaders, staying on nicely at the death. He is crying out for further already, or a much stiffer track and can be expected to win a maiden as a result of this promising show. Likely to be best suited by a good fast surface.

Spotted when 3rd to She's So Nice. Slowly into stride and outpaced in rear this good looking daughter of Kodiac will soon be winning. Although she handled getting her toe in today she will be more suited to faster under foot conditions and it would be no surprise to see her running again over 6f there is no doubt that she will stay 7f and even a mile later on in the year.(m)
